Amazing. I was watching when the GAOTD popped up, and within the first minute there were already 15 negative and 5 positive votes. Four minutes into the new giveaway day and there are already 23 negative votes, and still holding at 5 positive.

So I would say to anyone who is thinking about this software, subtract those votes from the count before you base any part of your decision on the positive/negative vote count because obviously those people haven't had enough time to download and trial this particular version of the giveaway offering, and have their own particular axe to grind, which may have nothing to do with the efficacy of this software.

Interesting program, especially for its ability to search for similar video files.

However, it lacks some important things:
- There is no way to change the sensibility of the comparison, and that means that it may miss some relatively different images, or find too many false positives.
- No way to change the rule that pre-selects the image(s) to delete.
- No way to compare a folder with another folder, and search only across them.
- No way to see the resolution, file size and quality ratio of the images.
- No way to see the percentage of difference between two similar images.
- No way to open the containing folder of a specific image.
- No way to really compare two duplicate images. (The preview in the top right corner is way to small). However, it is possible to double-click a thumbnail to open the image in your default image viewer. But since you have to close it and double-click on the other thumbnail to see the other image, it's not a good way to compare them visually.

IMO, that's a good basic app, but it needs much work. $25 for such a simple program is very expensive, especially given the power of some free alternatives.

A very good program to compare the images, although it has a strange interface, not very intuitive.

SimilarImages (no longer developed, but can still be downloaded, for example here: http://similarimages.en.softonic.com/)
A good program, but it has some bugs, and may crash or hang on some images. However, I recommend it, as it displays very useful information about the file size and image size, and it even highlight the less good information in red, and the better one in green. Selecting the image to delete is therefore very easy.

DupDetector (http://www.keronsoft.com/dupdetector.html)
I don't recommend this one, not very powerful.

Note that none of the free alternative can find video dupes. They handle only the pictures. So, I'll keep this giveaway anyway. :-)

Installs and runs fine on Win7x64.

Fell over due to memory allocation problem when I gleefully let it have a go at the contents of a full drive (where it identifed > 2200 pics).

With a gentler test of 53 image files, it did, as claimed recognise files by image so identified two pngs of a signature as the same even though one image is a resized version of the other. (Possible problem re thumbnails?). The prog searches sub-dirs by default and will search across multiple drives.

Unfortunately, the accurate list of duplicates doesn't presently include the file size in the information it supplies for the images.

The program is nice and simple and there's not likely to be much need for the helpful online help. There are some things which I would suggest which would necessarily make it a little more complicated but that could be part of an advanced mode perhaps.

Firstly, I'd make it possible to set and prioritise rules as to which duplicates are taggesd for deletion, e.g. none between these dates, none in this list of directories etc.

If there is a memory problem with larger number of files (and I have to say Pony is steadily making its way quite happily through 985 found pics on the offending drive as I write)then an easier means of identifying sub-dirs to search/ignore would be helpful.

As it stands, VSP is a very useful way of sorting out all those pics I've amassed, imported multiple times to different folders and, especially - recovered without the original file names from failed drives. There are definitely improvements required (most notably the size thing) but it's a very useful way of filling a hole in the capabilities of standard duplicate file cleaners.

Easy installation and registration on Windows XP SP3. Ran the program and it immediately found 2,640 image files in the default directory (My Pictures) and started comparing/reading files. I went to Windows Explorer and right-clicked on My Pictures folder and then selected Properties and the result said there are 2,066 files there. Once it starts comparing files, understandably the process slows as it compares all the files so that if you have thousands of images to compare it is likely to take many hours to complete. There is a status bar with green segments showing the progress of the program.

Word of caution is that next to the folder icon for adding the target directory is a red box with a white "X" which I assumed was for stopping the program or closing the window. However this program uses a similar looking button for REMOVING (deleting?) the Target Directory. Since the process is not complete (compared only about 200 files in the past 20 minutes) I haven't tried clicking on the red box to see what happens.

I checked the directory (_Duplicates) which I created and selected as the Target Directory before starting the program a second time but so far have not seen any files moved/placed there (so far only 400 files compared). I will let the program run and check on it in a few hours.
