DVD's are cheaper as Bluray discs are still too expensive.
You can store a reasonable quality 2 hour video or a high quality 1 hour video on DVD.

Nothing is perfect and all these alternatives have their uses. DVD's wear out...externals crash, etc. It's best to use more than one method to keep something really important to you. I have personal DVD's that are years old that I'm going to copy to an external just for that purpose.
