Hi TK.
"Block Ransomware and backup" Filter driver is the same as that used by the driver used by the "Secure PC" products.
"much like what anti-rootkit software does in order to determine if a rootkit filter driver is concealling portions of the file-system to hide malware like rootkit revealer used to do by comparing self enumerated file system with the windows API enumerated file system"
==> If I choose this method, I am troubled because there is no way to distinguish which one is the rootkit and what is good.
So, How about the following?
When the driver is installing, what if we filter it all and let the user choose whether to install the driver?
And thank you for always pointing out the points to fix or consider.

Hmmmm,,,,,,, This sounds just like going through your house and putting locks on all of your cupboards, closets, bedroom doors, and cabinets. Then you have to go through the inconvenience of having to unlock each one in order to access any of them. Why not just get good security software that blocks an outside intruder from getting in the front door?

How does this program differ from the controlled folder access that is included with Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019?

I'm not certain that this software has anything to do with Ransomware, why, because any software that has a key installed in the windows registry as "TrustedInstaller" can access the protected folder. with R/W privilege. It can be any rogue software out there including a modified Ransomware virus.
This software can work in conjunction with any Ransomware software without interfering or stopping it, since anybody can read from the protected folder. You can do better protection if you put your DOC files on a protected external drive or create a protected external vault, because some Ransomware viruses can not even let you log into your system at all.
